Room guides
Makeover ideas, room by room
Each guide lists what you can change in that room, which styles suit it, and how to photograph it — then opens the designer with the room selected.
- Living roomThe living room is where a style shows first, because it has the most big pieces: a sofa, a rug, a coffee table, and the lighting that ties them together.
- BedroomBedrooms respond to small changes more than any other room: new bedding, a headboard, two matching lamps, and blackout curtains can make a room look renovated without touching the walls.
- KitchenYou cannot buy a new kitchen on Amazon, but you can buy the things that make a kitchen look new: bar stools, pendant lights, cabinet hardware, a peel-and-stick backsplash, open shelving, and a runner.
- BathroomA bathroom makeover without a plumber is mostly a vanity, a mirror, lighting, and textiles.
- Dining roomA dining room has one job and three big decisions: the table, the chairs, and the light above them.
- Home officeThe home office is the room most people furnished in a hurry.
- Backyard and patioOutdoor spaces are where the biggest-ticket items live: a gazebo, a grill, a dining set, a fire pit, even a swing set or an above-ground pool.
